Our Memory and Databases: A Relatable Connection

Our memory works a lot like a database. We store countless pieces of information, but not all of it is equally accessible. What makes certain memories stand out? Emotions.

Just as an index in a database allows for quick retrieval of specific data, emotions act as the index for our memories. A joyful event, a heartbreaking moment, or a thrilling experience is easier to recall because the emotional “index” makes it prominent.

Without an emotional connection, memories are like unindexed data — stored but harder to retrieve. This is why tying learning or experiences to emotions can make them more impactful and easier to recall.
